The Mayor of Stip, Sashko Nikolov, on the panel discussion of the CIVIL discussion "Census: Statistics, not politics" in Shtip says that when he came to the position of mayor two months ago there were no statistics, ie exact number of population. He faced the same problem as a cardiologist when they did not have statistics on how many patients there are in the eastern region.
The census is essential for a local government. We do not have data on how many inhabitants of the ethnic communities live in our municipality, we do not know the age limit.
We do not have accurate data to be able to apply for projects in the European Union. If we have data we will know how many kindergartens, schools, hospitals… to open, for example Clinical Center that is planned. We must know the demographic, social and economic parameters. We need to plan infrastructure, but we do not have statistics to plan.
"Without a census, we will walk and wander, we will not be interesting for the EU," said Nikolov.
